Greenport Flats: Bringing a Forgotten Mansion Back to Life
At 62 Coleman Street, an old mansion from the 1890s had slowly turned into an abandoned shell. Over the years it became a nursing home, then a vandalized and empty property that neighbors avoided. Broken windows, dark hallways, and years of neglect made it one of the most deteriorated buildings in the neighborhood.
Most people saw a building ready to be demolished.
Venetrust saw an opportunity.
The vision was bold: transform the 42,000-square-foot structure into beautiful modern apartments while preserving the history that made the building special. It would not be easy. The property needed almost everything rebuilt, from plumbing and electrical systems to energy efficiency and security.
But instead of tearing it down, Venetrust chose to bring it back to life.
The project became known as Greenport Flats.
The team designed 39 unique residences with different living styles, some with outdoor decks, others with traditional apartment layouts, and some that still felt like private homes. Modern «green» technology was added throughout the property, including energy-efficient windows, advanced HVAC systems, EV charging stations, and sustainable materials.
One of the most important decisions was saving a beautiful century-old magnolia tree that stood on the property. Rather than removing it, the courtyard was built around it, creating a peaceful gathering space for residents.
What was once abandoned became one of the neighborhood’s proudest landmarks.
Families moved in. Young professionals found modern housing close to downtown. The street felt alive again. A building that once symbolized decline now represented growth, sustainability, and new beginnings.
Today, Greenport Flats stands as proof that with vision, patience, and smart investment, even forgotten places can become thriving communities again.
